[ตี้ถาปัด]

Narayanhiti, in Narayanhiti Palace, is made up of two words ‘narayan’ and ‘hiti’. 'Naryan' is a form of Hindu god "Lord Vishnu” whose temple is located opposite to the palace and ‘hiti’ means “water spout” which is also located to the east of main entrance in the precincts of the palace, and which has a legend associated with it. The entire enclosure surrounded by a compound wall, located in the north-central part of Kathmandu, is called the Narayanhiti palace. It was a new palace, in front of the old palace of 1915 vintage, built in 1970 in the form of a contemporary Pagoda. It was built on the occasion of the marriage of King Birenda Bir Bikram Shah, the then heir apparent to the throne. The southern gate of the palace is located at the crossing of Prithvipath and Darbar Marg roads.

The palace area covers (30 hectares (74 acres)) and is fully secured with gate controlled walls on all sides.The palace, as previously discused in Kathmandu's history, was the scene of a gruesome tragedy, termed “Nepal’s greatest tragedy”, on June 1, 2001 at the hall in the palace where the Crown Prince Dipendra in an inebriated state gunned down his immediate family consisting of his father King Birendra, his mother Queen Aishvarya, his brother and sister, and also five of his relatives, later killing himself.

 With the opening of the tourist industry after the change over in the political scenario of Nepal in 1950, hotel industry got a boost. Now, Kathmandu boasts of several five star hotels such as Hotel Yak & Yeti,The Everest Hotel, Soaltee Holiday Inn and De L'annapurna, The Shanker Hotel (Heritage hotel: formerly a Rana Palace), the four star hotels, Hotel Vaishali, Hotel Narayani, The Blue Star, Hotel Sherpa, Grand Hotel, The Malla Hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, Woodlands Dynasty Plaza, Royal Singi Hotel and Hotel Woodlands and the 3 star The Garden Hotel, Hotel Ambassador and Aloha Inn and many others.

Thamel is a popular tourist destination in Kathmandu, Nepal. Thamel has been the centre of the tourist industry in Kathmandu for over two decades, growing up between two of the original hotels, the Kathmandu Guesthouse and Hotel Utse. Even though Thamel has been referred to as the "ghetto" by some, most low-budget travelers consider it a tourist haven.

Its concentration of narrow streets are lined with small shops selling everything from food and provisions to clothes, walking gear, cakes, pastries, music, DVDs (mostly pirated), handicrafts, travel agents and budget hotels.
The area has some very good restaurants. Although prices tend to be significantly higher than non-tourist areas, food hygiene is generally a lot better too.
Ason Bazaar, Durbar Square, Samakushi and Swayambhunath are a mere 10 to 30 minutes walk from Thamel. Thamel has a vibrant ethnic culture practised by its core population of the Newar people.

Hashish sellers openly approach people in the streets, whispering invitations to buy as they pass you. In recent years, a number of adult shows/bars have appeared, which has made Thamel more seedy.
Thamel also acts as the pre-base camp for mountaineers. It boasts a wide range of mountaineering gear shops, foreign money exchange booths, pubs, clubs and nightlife along with the numerous travel lodges and guest houses. Gang crimes and teenage violence-crazed incidents take place quite often in some regions of greater Thamel. All in all, Thamel is home to a wide range of audience of the nepalese population for entertainment and employment purposes.

เราใช้เวลาในการเดินเล่นไปมาในย่าน Thamel อยู่พักใหญ่ก่อนจะมาจบลงที่ร้านขายผ้าที่มาดามกุ้งแนะนำ ผ้าที่นิยมซื้อกันจะเป็นผ้้าคลุมไหล่ Pashmena  ที่ทำมาจากขนของตัวจามรี เทคนิคลีลาในการต่อของในแบบฉบับของมาดามกุ้งที่เน้นกลยุทธ์ทำให้คนขายงงถุกหยิบออกมาใช้ จนในที่สุด ทั้งมาดามกุ้ง คุณนายจิ๋มและหลานทั้งสองก็ต้องเสียเงินซื้อผ้าและของที่ระลึกกันไปหลายตังค์ ไม่รู้ว่าคนขายงงหรือคนซื้อมึน จนเกิดอาหารหิว หน้ามืดตาลายเพราะได้เวลาอาหารกลางวันกันแล้ว เหลียวซ้ายแลขวาไปมาก็เลือกเอาร้านข้างๆนี่แหละเพราะหิว และขี้เกียจเดินแล้ว

เจ้านี้อร่อยใช้ได้หลังจากได้อาหารตกถึงท้องเป็นที่เรียบร้อยแล้วก้ได้เวลาออกเที่ยวกันต่อ จุกหมายคือจตุรัสดุรบาร์ที่สามารถนั่งสามล้อไปได้ไม่ไกลนัก ระหว่างทางก็ได้สัมผัสกับบรรยากาศของถนนและร้านค้าที่พลุกพล่านไปด้วยผู้คน

Most of the cultural centers of Nepal are concentrated around the Kathmandu valley; among those cultural sites. the important one is the Hanuman-dhoka Durbar Square. Located at the heart of ancient city Kathmandu, it is a complex of beautiful temples and shrines, both Hindu and Buddhist. Most of them are built in the pagoda style embellished with intricately carved exteriors, built between 12th and 18th centuries. The Durbar Square, with its old temples, palaces, epitomizes the religious and cultural life of the people. It is here that Kings of Nepal are crowned and their coronations solemnized. Until the early 20th century the Durbar Square was the King's residence. It is a living open museum of Nepal.

The name Hanuman-dhoka Durbar came from the statue of Hanuman established by King Pratap Malla at the entrance of the royal palace in 1672 A.D. The nine-storeyed residence built by King Prithvi Narayan Shah in 1770, is called Basantapur Durbar. The whole complex is also known as Kathmandu Durbar Square. The palace complex was originally founded during the Lichchhavi period, but as it stands today most of it was constructed by King Pratap Malla in 17th century. The palace was renovated many times in later years. The architectural remains and art objects within the palace complex now existing are from Malla, Shah and Rana periods of Nepal.

The Durbar Square area is actually made up of two sub-areas. The outer complex is renowned for numerous interesting temples as Kumari Ghar, Kasthmandap, Shiv-Parbati Temple, Jagannath Temple, Big Bell etc., while the inner complex comprises the old palace area, Hanuman-dhoka and its courtyards as Nasal Chowk, Mul Chowk, Sundari Chowk, Lohan Chowk, Mohan Chowk, Basantapur Durbar and others. There are many temples in the inner complex also. most notable being the Taleju Temple dedicated to female royal diety. The area includes ten courtyards these days, but prior the great earthquake of 1934, the area was expanded upto New Road Gate including thirty five courtyards.

The Hanuman-dhoka Royal Palace is includeed in the Protected Monument Zone along with other private buildings. The site is enlisted in the World Heritage Site of UNESCO along with other six monument zones of the Kathmandu Valley in October 1979.

Besides the magnificent temples and shrines, other interesting aspects are various festivals, cultural activities and traditions people are following from centuries, which are presented in the Durbar Square. The major festivals include Indrajatra, Dashain, Gaaijatra, Machchhindra-nath jatra etc. These are the occasion when the people from all over the city gather there to mark their centuries old tradition. All the carvings and architure in this area are expectionally fine which make the architecture in this Hanuman-dhoka Durbar Square among the most important sights for travellers to see.

The literal meaning of Durbar Square is a place of palaces. There are three preserved Durbar Squares in Kathmandu valley and one unpreserved in Kirtipur. The Durbar Square of Kathmandu is located in the old city and has heritage buildings representing four kingdoms (Kantipur, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kirtipur), built over centuries, the earliest being the Licchavi dynasty. There were further additions and refurbishments during the reign of Mallas (9th century) and then the Ranas. The complex has 50 temples and is distributed in two quadrangles of the Durbar Square. The outer quadrangle has the Kasthamandap, Kumari Ghar and Shiva-Parvati Temple while the inner quadrangle has the Hanuman dhoka and the main palace.

The Durbar square is surrounded by spectacular architecture and vividly showcases the skills of the Newari artists and craftsmen over several centuries. The royal palace was originally situated at Dattaraya square and was only later moved to the Durbar square location.
Bhaktapur Durbar square
Unlike the Durbar squares at Kathamandu and Patan, the one at Bhaktapur lies to the north of the city. It is linked to the more important square called Tomadhi Tol via small alleyways.
The Durbar square at Bhaktapur was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1934 and hence appears more spacious than the others, located at Kathmandu and Pathan.
Originally, there were 99 courtyards attached to this place, but now only 6 remain. Prior to the earthquake, there were 3 separate groups of temples. But currently, the square itself is surrounded just by buildings that survived the quake.
